    Abstract:
In this thesis, we study the impact that media exposure has on the return of the so-called "superstars". That is, people and companies which, because of their talent and occupation, have a large potential market. Specifically, we focus on the case of Shakira as an example of one of these superstars, in the economic sense and in the literal sense of the term. From quantitative analyses, we estimate how the increase in her popularity index (measured by Google Trends) following her sentimental separation has increased her music plays on Spotify and Youtube, beyond purely musical reasons. Our results suggest an increase of 26 million Spotify plays is attributable to the separation announcement itself. Given the ease of news dissemination and music playback, the effect of their separation on sales of their music has also been immediate.
