Abstract:
There are many factors that may influence the progress of a country or a territory. Asking why there are so many differences between the richest and poorest areas involves a debate with a wide range of arguments and possible responses, among which there is innovation. It is considered the cornerstone of any current economy, but we wonder what was its role through Spanish history. The interest in this issue has led us to develop this study, which presents a regional approach and is based on patents, considered one of the best factors related to innovation. The objective of this study is to define the dynamics of innovation in Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid between 1880 and 1918 from the patent applications registered in each area and other indicators (GDP per capita, literacy and entrepreneurship). First, we introduce the subject from the study of various economic positions that have dealt with innovation and have included it in their corpus. Later, we present a brief historical context of Spain and of the selected areas, which leads to the practical work. At this point we analyse the evolution of the indicators mentioned and also of the patent applications. Then, we conduct a study of the patents from two perspectives: sectorial and professional. This aims to observe which sectors had more innovation and if the profile of the inventors was marked or defined. Finally we put together the indicators with the number of patents in order to see if they have similar tendencies. Finally, we present the conclusions of the analysis.
