Design project of an approvable FIA Cross Car chassis for competition purposes

    Abstract:
    All documents presented below serve to the development of a design project for the conception of a FIA Cross Car chassis with competition purposes in all categories ruled by FIA standards. To accomplish this goal, the development of a safety structure is proposed in compliance with the Regulation for Safety Structures Homologation by the RFEDA as well as Articles 253 and 279B from FIA’s Annex J. A reverse engineering analysis process is carried out based on a particular market study aiming for the development of multiple virtual structure models to apply the different test cases prescribed by the FIA for the chassis’ homologation approval. This process aims to obtain reference values to characterize structural properties as well as its resistance. Subsequently, multiple alternatives will be proposed to analyze how different structural typologies react in front of the different homologation load cases. Once observed, the best chassis will be selected for an optimization process. Additionally, a general analysis and proposal for the remaining systems that make up the full vehicle is carried out in order to virtually modelling a series of reference objects representing the main power unit or the steering among others as a basis for the approach of the overall Cross Car layout. An indicative basic anchoring system will be design for the attachment of the different components to the Cross Car chassis. These different applications will be realized through specialized software tools such as Autodesk Inventor 2024 and FUSION 360 for the 3D modelling of the elements and ANSYS Mechanical R2023 for the application of finite elements analysis (FEA) in accordance with homologation’s test cases requirements. The ultimate purpose of this project is the conception of a fully functional, competitive, and approvable chassis in addition to the approach of its manufacturing process.
