Abstract:
In recent decades, the consumption of fast-paced digital content has grown significantly, particularly among young adults. However, debate persists regarding how this type of content may influence cognitive processes such as cognitive attention, sustained attention, and inhibitory control. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of fast-paced and slow-paced audiovisual content on attention in young adults aged 18 to 25. To conduct this study, an experiment was carried out with a sample of 27 participants who were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: fast-paced, slow-paced, or a control. After viewing the experimental content, participants completed the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) (Robertson et al., 1997) to measure sustained attention and inhibitory control. Information was also collected on the times of day short videos were viewed. The results did not reveal statistically significant differences between the experimental conditions. However, the fast-paced group showed a tendency to make more inhibitory errors. Similarly, a significant relationship was observed between hours of audiovisual consumption and No-Go errors. In conclusion, the results do not support the proposed hypotheses, but they indicate that inhibitory control could be influenced by audiovisual pacing and the regular consumption of short videos. Further research into this relationship with larger samples is encouraged.
