Title in different languages: Psychological detachment among seafarers: a missing dimension
Abstract: This Master’s Thesis explores how seafarers experience psychological detachment while on board— a phenomenon that has not been previously studied in this context and which is shaped by multiple interrelated factors. Using a qualitative interpretative approach, 20 in-depth interviews were conducted, providing access to narratives in which psychological detachment does not emerge as a stable or guaranteed reality, but rather as a fragmented, symbolic, and often unattainable process. The findings show that factors such as the type of vessel, hierarchical rank, work organization and organizational culture constructed through life on board directly influence the ability to detach from work, generating a cycle of sustained fatigue. The narratives reveal that servant leadership, access to private spaces, and interpersonal relationships based on trust are conditions that can facilitate psychological detachment, while surveillance, constant pressure, and lack of emotional support hinder it. This study not only offers an in-depth and situated understanding of psychological detachment in the maritime context, but also invites a reconsideration of this phenomenon as a right tied to wellbeing and operational safety, rather than a matter of individual will. Ultimately, this thesis proposes a complex, segmented, and humanized reading of the working experience at sea, offering analytical insights to guide future research and support the development of organizational strategies to prevent and mitigate work-related fatigue among seafarers.
