Abstract: The growing of waste generation has become a fundamental issue in the management of urban spaces. Within the framework of a process of rapid urbanization, Latin American cities face great challenges when it comes to managing their waste, introducing questions that involve other issues such as coexistence, the role of public spaces, neighbourhood belonging, individual practices and collective inhabitation. Malvín Norte is a neighbourhood of Montevideo where the problem of waste is of great importance and where the Facultad de Ciencias of the Universidad de la República has initiated a participatory line of research on the subject. Thus, the aim of this work was to continue working along these lines in pursuit of two objectives: to detect those problematic spaces linked to solid waste and to propose solutions for the neighbourhood. In order to do this, a methodological strategy was designed based on the implementation of a participatory mapping workshop in which we worked on multiplanes regarding two analysis axes. The main results refer to the problem of waste in these spaces being the “tip of the iceberg” of endless facts that reflect the complexities of the system, involving issues of greater scope such as coexistence, consumption patterns, social and territorial segregation, fragmentation, identity and education. They also highlight the importance of generating management models that are specific to each territory and the important roles played by the participation, the coordination between institutions and the educational centers as catalysts for possible processes of change.
