Abstract:
ABSTRACT Adolescents start their sexual relationships at younger ages. Hypothesis: The second cycle's students present minimum level of knowledge and sexual risk behaviors that limits activity to enjoy enough healthy sexual and reproductive activity. Principal objective: Describe the knowledge and attitudes about sexuality of students of 4th ESO, exploring the age of onset sexual relations and compare the knowledge between both high schools. Secondary objectives: Expose what contraceptive methods are used, and what sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) the students know, and observe whether there are significant differences between two high schools and identify the variables that influence the differences. Material and method: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and comparative study of two different samples was carried out with 4th ESO's students from two high schools using an ad-hoc questionnaire validated to assess the knowledge and attitudes about sexuality, contraception and STDs. Results: In both secondary schools, among adolescents who had sexual relations, 50% (n=9) had done it for the first time at 15 years old. In addition, significant differences were found with regard to knowledge of some contraceptive methods like female condoms, injectable hormonal contraception and IUDs. There is also a lack of knowledge regarding STDs like chancroid infection, genital warts and hepatitis B and C. Conclusion: Students have some knowledge regarding sexuality but still have scarcities. We must continue working on future interventions to promote sexual health of adolescents. Keywords: adolescence, knowledge, contraception, STD, health education.
