Abstract:
Aim: The general objective was analyzing and identifying the stigma phenomenon in nursing students about people with mental pathology. Specifically, the existence of prejudices and stereotypes towards mental health patients in the academic field were examined, furthermore analyzing the perception and emotions of these students. Design: Qualitative study with a phenomenological perspective. Participants: Four students in fourth course of Nursing Degree in Universidad Rovira I Virgili (Seu del Penedès). Two of the interviewees had had previous contact with people with psychiatric pathology. Method: To perform this study semi-structured depth interviews were used. The questions were suggested to guide towards the most common factors to generate the stigma based on the bibliography consulted. This questions were cataloged in different thematic categories with their respective codes. After analyzing the interviews and interpreting the information obtained, it was compared with diverse scientific studies that address the stigma towards people with mental illness. Results: It was possible to recognize diverse perceptions, emotions and stigmatizing attitudes towards people with mental illness such as: fear, distrust, danger, discrimination and unpredictability. Conclusions: We have been able to verify that, based in the bibliography consulted, the stigmatizing factors matched and have emerged during the discourse of the interviewees. However, despite the different bibliographical sources which indicate that knowledge and previous experiences with people with mental illness were a protective factor to reduce the stigma, in our case it has not been a notable difference between the participants who had already had experience working in Mental Health and already started the practice in this area, with participants who had not had any contact with these patients.
