Abstract:
The catalan county Baix Penedès is characterized, especially in its coastal towns, by a high seasonal population product of a concentration of secondary residences; because of this, as a whole it’s often considered a big commuter town that has strong links with the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (BMA). Its geographical situation, within a close distance of both the BMA and the Camp de Tarragona region and being at the crossroads of several important infrastructures, as well as its unique sociodemographical dynamics make it an interesting object of study. Throughout this study, the patterns of obligated mobility (in terms of both labor mobility and study-related mobility) are analyzed from the population census data, as well as the public transportation network and its mobility flows, working with the databases obtained from the Camp de Tarragona Public Transport Consortium’s (ATM) Integrated Fare Management System (SGIT) and other complimentary sources like the Rodalies de Catalunya Direction. The census analysis shows a recent growing tendency of labor mobility towards outside of the county, especially towards the BMA; also, the relative use of public transportation is higher in the commutes to the counties of Barcelonès and Baix Llobregat than to the neighboring counties, a fact most likely conditioned by the provision of the public transport network. The mobility flows results sustain this fact: railway users, with a wide provision that mostly covers the connection with the BMA, vastly outnumber the intercity bus users, whose comparatively smaller provision covers the connection with the Tarragonés.
