Abstract:
Introduction. Nursing professionals have always been a key point in caring for patients. In the control and treatment of the pain they are responsible for their evaluation, they do the diagnosis of nursing and plan care to reduce or eliminate it. In the intensive care units (ICU) of European health systems there are several assessment scales and tools to detect it objectively. At present, is demonstrated the concern for humanizing cares and dealing with pain based on professional experience. In the ICU, there are resources that arise from great technological advances, which increase the aggressiveness of the environment in the service. It is nursing competence to direct its actions, relationships and environment in the comfort and well-being, to guarantee a process of quality recovery. For this reason, it is sought to promote the humanization of these units, addressing the patient as a whole and not just focusing on his illness. Objectives. Explore the ways in which nurses with experience in critical patient care identify suffering and manage pain and comfort. Methodology. A qualitative study was carried out by participating observation of 4 nurses while working at the ICU (two from Italy and two from Catalonia). Results 1- Involvement and presence of the family. The family is a source of comfort for the patient, as a result of this fact, nurses are flexible in the visit hours of the unit to achieve the greatest possible family support and favor the role of caregiver in the family. 2- Communication. They facilitate tools for communication difficulties (interpreters, writing material ...) but also reinforce nonverbal communication through gestures, looks ... 3- Well-being and body care. Do not lose the personality of the patient, reinforcing the sensation of control of your body. They take into account the importance of rest as a basis for improving comfort. 4- Person-centered care. Avoid situations of vulnerability. They handle the pain, being one of the great fears of the patient and the family. They are aware of the medication and the main adverse effects, as well as they have criteria for the correct handling of them. 5- Caring for the environment. Humanize the environment, for the greatest peace and comfort. Conclusion. It is clear that it is important to establish a balance between the technological and human side to promote the management of comfort and pain. Currently the ICUs are already working thinking about the stress and concern of patients ensuring safety, well-being and confidence. The treatment of pain in the health systems of Catalonia and Italy present great similarities in their approach, finding differentiation in the accessibility factor.
