Neologisms in Orwell's 1984: Two Spanish Translations

Abstract:
George Orwell's 1984, a renowned dystopian novel, has been translated multiple times into Spanish, presenting challenges due to the neologisms in the fictional language Newspeak. This paper explores the translation techniques employed by Rafael Vázquez and Olivia de Miguel to tackle these neologisms. It aims to provide an understanding of the predominant techniques used to transfer neologisms into Spanish and convey the grammatical rules of Newspeak. Through quantitative analysis and comparative evaluation, De Miguel's translation is found to better comprehend and restate the meaning of the original text compared to Vázquez's translation of Newspeak.
