Feeding habits of young amateur basketball players

    Abstract:
    The aim of this study is evaluate the food intake of a group of young athletes aged between 18 and 30 years and to compare the results with the Mediterranean diet recommended by the professionals using the Frequency Questionnaire Food Consumption previously validated. 12 amateur basketball players from a club in the area of Tarragona participated in the study. The results showed that 56,9% of the total energy of the day came from carbohydrates, 30,3% were protein and 12,7% were lipids. It has also been noticed that the frequency of consumption of the most of the foods does not match the nutritional recommendation of the Mediterranean diet. According to them, there is a low carbohydrate intake, high consumption of protein and lipid shortage in the diet.
