Abstract:
This work is part of the characterization of native varieties. The main objective of the work is to analyze the behavior of three historical varieties of the Mediterranean in the context of the Costers del Segre Designation of Origin: Macabeu, Malvasia de Sitges and Trobat Negre. The characterization was carried out throughout the 2024 vegetative cycle in the estates of the L'Olivera winery, in Vallbona de les Monges. The study was carried out in three different plots. In each plot there is one of the varieties studied and strains from one or several lines have been selected to be able to study them according to the variables offered by each estate. Two rows of Macabeu have been studied according to their training system, the Vertical Trellis or the Lys. Malvasia de Sitges has been studied in eight different rows according to two rootstocks, 140-Ruggeri and 161-49 Couderc, two training systems, Cortina Simple and Cortina Doble, and two pruning systems, Royat and Guyot. In the case of Trobat, it has been studied in a row where the differences in vigor of the shoots are very marked, to know how the variety responds according to different vegetative expressions. In order to characterize the varieties, the potential fertility, the harvest and health of this and the pruning carried out on each plant studied have been measured. The water potential in Malvasia de Sitges and Trobat has also been measured over time. The maturation in the lines under study has been monitored and the must has been analyzed at the time of harvest. In Macabeu, it has been possible to observe how the strangulation of the rachis influences the quality of the grapes. Although Macabeu has been greatly affected by frost, interesting differences have been observed between the more traditional system, the Vertical Trellis and the Lys, suggesting the latter as a good alternative in certain contexts to ensure a quality harvest. In the Malvasia de Sitges, its sensitivity to powdery mildew, breakage of shoots by the wind has been observed and how it has shown greater productivity in the 140-Ruggeri vine and Guyot pruning but better quality in the 161-49 Couderc vine and the Cordó Simple vine, highlighting the importance of knowing the particularities of the variety. The Trobat is an interesting variety and in the process of recovery that has highlighted the influence of the plant's vigor on both the production and quality of the must. This last variety demonstrates the importance of research and observation in the field to be able to understand the behavior of each variety and thus carry out a more tailored management of the plant for each one.
