    Abstract:
The teaching of reading in primary schools is a subject of great concern in educational studies. This study has two purposes: (1) to investigate the differences in educational systems of Poland and Spain and approaches to teaching reading skills in primary schools; (2) to find an explanation as to why Spanish students score lower on standardised tests. The results suggest that both systems contain some weak and strong elements affecting education. Moreover, there are several aspects that are highly influential in terms of outcomes of teaching reading in native and foreign languages.
