Effects of Chlorella vulgaris on biometric parameters and body composition: dual study on glucose metabolism in rats and response to hypoxic stress in humans

    Abstract:
Chlorella is a functional microalga supplement with a complete nutritional profile. Rats were administered Chlorella for six months; measurements included initial and final body weight, organ weight, intake, excretion, and glucose tolerance. The supplemented group showed improved glycemic modulation, with no changes in other parameters. In a human study, 18 volunteers were exposed to hypoxia in a hypobaric chamber before and after supplementation; body composition was assessed via bioimpedance (weight, fat mass, fat-free mass, muscle mass, total and intra-/extracellular water, BMI, basal metabolism, visceral fat, bone mass, and protein). Chlorella partially attenuated changes in variables related to hypoxia-induced dehydration, such as total, intracellular, and extracellular body water.
