    Abstract:
This work focuses on the characterization and identification of varieties of the Canary Islands and Madeira by means of microsatellite analysis, using 20 molecular markers. 45 varieties were identified. Ten major names and 6 molecular profiles (MP-SSR) were proposed for inclusion in the Vitis Intenational Variety Catalog (VIVC) database. Two new varieties (sports) were presented to be included in the VIVC. In addition, 21 new synonyms for already registered varieties were proposed. Of the 45 varieties identified, 17 have been proposed as local varieties. This local population has also been compared to a world population to study its uniqueness. These results suggest that the local varieties have had a great influence of the varieties of the Iberian Peninsula throughout the years and a slight Italian influence.
